Discovered 1982 March 15 by A. Mrkos at Kleť.
 Named in memory of Milan Rastislav Štefánik (1880-1919), astronomer and meteorologist. He worked at Meudon Observatory during 1905-1907 and proposed to build a new observatory on the island of Tahiti. He received the Janssen award in 1907 and the Wilde award in 1911.
