One of his papers, On bicompact spaces, introduces what today is called the Stone-Čech compactification of regular topological spaces. His research in topology is fundamental, but his work was also important in the development of functional analysis. Name proposed by J. Tichá and Z. Moravec following a number of suggestions from Charles University.
